Germany will not sell MTU-396 engines for the Chinese-made submarines Thailand ordered, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius told Thai Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai at the 6th United Nations Peacekeeping Ministerial Meeting in Germany.
Pistorius said this was due to a European Union (EU) ban on exporting military equipment to China.
In December 2024, Phumtham said that Thailand was waiting for Germany’s decision on whether it could sell the MTU-396 engines to Thailand instead of China. The alternative being considered is the CHD-620 engine, used in eight S26T Yuan-class submarines sold to Pakistan.
Thailand initially planned to buy three S26T submarines, but discussions are now focused on buying fewer. Each submarine costs around 13 billion baht. The first submarine is 80% complete, with a unit established, sailors trained, and systems in place. Cancelling the deal would cost Thailand 7–8 billion baht, which Phumtham said would be undesirable.
