Thai Enquirer:
Thaksin should lead tariff negotiations with Trump, said former Finance Minister Suchart Thada-Thamrongvech, also a former leader of the Pheu Thai Party.
Suchart argued that high U.S. import tariffs will mostly burden American consumers, not foreign producers. This will drive inflation, raise prices, and trigger a global economic slowdown, reducing the competitiveness of U.S. industries. In the end, the U.S. risks slower economic growth.
Small countries should avoid retaliatory tariffs, as they will only increase costs for their people. Instead, they should focus on increasing trade among themselves. Larger economies, like China and Europe, have the capacity to retaliate and challenge U.S. policies, signaling that they are not dependent on the U.S.
The U.S. move is a result of poor advice and the president’s reckless approach, similar to bluffing in poker without a strong hand. Smaller players may step back, but major economies like China are standing firm. The U.S. may soon be forced to back down, especially as many Americans oppose the tariffs.
For Thailand, retaliatory tariffs would harm its economy by raising domestic prices. Instead, Thailand should send a respected figure—such as former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra—to negotiate directly with President Trump. This could lead to tariff reductions and greater U.S. imports.
In the short term, reduced exports to the U.S. could slow production and job growth. Thailand might consider letting the baht weaken to mitigate the effects of U.S. tariffs and boost trade with other countries.
If other countries agree to lower import tariffs among themselves, it could reduce the negative impact of U.S. policies. This would increase global efficiency, with production distributed according to each country’s strengths.
Thailand should use this opportunity to buy cheaper imports and export them to other markets, while proposing to the U.S. a 0% tariff on all imports as a bargaining strategy. In the long term, Thailand could aim for a 0% tariff policy with all trading partners.
